6 Builder Fabric
This is the cotton cloth on which the motor tyre maker places the greatest reliance for the wearing qualities of the finished tyre. There are two main varieties, the square woven or " builder fabric," in which the warp and weft threads are practically equal, and the " cord " fabric, which is also square woven, but wherein the warp only is relied on for the strength or any other stress-resisting qualities that may be required. The builder fabric is tightly woven, giving it a stiff, hard feel, and is a superfine " duck." The standard fabric is 171/4 oz. per square yard, composed for 22's or 23's warp and weft yarns, 11-fold single ply, the twist in the single 14 to 15 turns, and in the ply yarn 4 to 5 turns per inch; 23 X 23-ends and picks per inch. These are the " fabric tyres of commerce " (see Cord Tyre Fabric and Breaker) -
7 Quilts, Toilet
QUILTS, TOILETA non-reversible fabric of the pique type in which a fine face cloth is woven by healds, and is figured by a tightly woven warp actuated by a jacquard. The usual arrangement is one binding warp to two face ends. The fabrics may be (1) " loose backs " in which the binding warp threads float on the back of the cloth when not forming figure; (2) half-fast; and (3) fast backs. In half-fast and fast backs the binding warp interweaves more or less firmly with an additional weft. In the better qualities, a third weft may be introduced as wadding. Toilets are usually woven grey and bleached in the piece. -
8 jicarilla
(Sp. model spelled same [xikaríja], diminutive of jícara [see above])1) Carlisle: 1867. A small cup used for drinking hot chocolate, or a small, tightly woven basket. Cobos concurs with both of these definitions. See jicara above.2) OED: 1850. An Apache tribe found primarily in New Mexico. Hendrickson suggests that the tribe takes its name from a hill in southeast Colorado or northern New Mexico shaped like an upside-down chocolate cup, a place where they once lived. He also notes that the tribe may have been named for the baskets woven by its members. Also known as Jicarilla Apaches. -

17 jicara
Clark: 1900s. Usually a vase or bowl, but Watts notes that it can also refer to tightly woven containers made and used by Apache Indians. Carlisle defines it as "a drinking cup made by cutting a gourd in half." Santamaría defines jícara as the fruit of the jícaro or calabash tree. It is a hard, solid fruit whose flesh and seeds are similar to those of a squash. He also notes that the term is also applied to a wide-mouthed hemispherical vessel made from the jícara fruit. It is generally painted with many colors, polished and engraved, and often blackened with smoke. By extension, the term is also used in Mexico to refer to any vessel primarily used for drinking hot chocolate. The DRAE concurs and adds that in Spain jícara often refers to an earthenware vessel used for drinking hot chocolate. Cobos glosses it as a chocolate mug or a cup made from cutting a gourd shell in half. -
18 Toilet Cloths
TOILET CLOTHS, TOILETINGSTerms applied to a number of fabrics such as bed quilts or counterpanes, dressing-table covers, and connote a distinctive type of fabric, the chief feature of which is a face cloth in the plain weave, stitched down according to a prearranged design by means of a tightly-woven binding warp. This causes the figure to stand out in relief, and this feature is enhanced when wadding weft is used. Many qualities are made, including loose-backs, e.g., those in which the tight figuring threads float at the back when not forming figure; half-fast backs in which the figuring threads are partly bound by interlacing with some back picks; and fast backs, in which there is a back pick for every card so that the figuring ends are well bound at the back, usually in the plain weave. The cloths are known as 2-pick, 3-pick, 4-pick, 5-pick and 6-pick toilets according to the number of picks inserted at each figuring shed. -
